Pirthday through the end of Post-Birthday

A month ago, when I verbally realized I was turning 28, I had a small panic attack.  In an effort to channel that freak out energy into something more positive, I've decided to celebrate my birthday for as long as possible.  That means a week, maybe longer.  Hence forth, time will be separated into two categories: Pirthday (the time before June 22, my birthday) and Post-Birthday (the time after June 22). All days corresponding to this time period (KBD, standing for Katie's Birthday) shall be labeled accordingly with an *.

It's taken me a day or two to get over that 13.5 hour workday on Thursday, but Pirthday is now on a nice, smooth track.  Some highlights from the past few days:

Getting a much needed haircut and highlights, Birthday Shopping Spree!, Dancing with my two year old nephew Will and introducing him to Cooper the dog and also pinatas, a vegan chocolate raspberry birthday cake that my mom ordered for me, My dad leaving for Russia on Saturday only to find out that his flight was really on Sunday so he came back home, Driving my dad's Range Rover! and getting my mac fixed for FREE! - The Mac Genesis said it was covered by a recall but I think it was more because I was wearing those tight pants.

Rock on Saturday*.

A little elbow grease to get to paradise.

Remember when I said that we couldn't go on a trip because nothing would work out just right? Well, two days and lots of frustration later, we figured it out... Hanalei, here we come! Here are some pics from various travel websites. Check out our lodging... www.hanalei-kauai.com

Perfection!

Hanalei Bay and Pier... 2 minute walk from our lodging.

The area where we are staying.

Town... 5 minute walk from our lodging.

Or we could ride these cool bicycles!

A Prestonized plan to save the animals

First of all, I should start out by explaining that I often have grandiose ideas that sometimes fizzle out after I've had time to think about them or discuss them logically with Preston (A.K.A The Dream Crusher).

My most recent plan was inspired by photos of animals affected by the oil spill, either covered in oil or dead on the beach. The first thing I wanted to do was drop everything and rush to the beach and save the animals, but because that would involve a major life change and a specific type of education that I don't have, the first thing I did was look for more stuff online. I found other pictures of animals being cleaned and turtles and pelicans being released into cleaner areas not yet affected by the oil. That settled my heart a little bit, but I still wanted to do something.

I felt like a really big, impressive idea was needed to inspire people to feel the same urgent feeling I had when I first saw those pictures online. The pelican trying to spread it's oil covered wings, the seagull stuck on it's back, unable to flip over from the mess of oil around it and the dead sea turtle lying on the beach. These animals are living in oil. They can't do the basic things they need to do to survive. They can't swim or fly, they can't eat. They can't breath.

I can't fly, but I can swim, and I can run and bike. So my first thought was to sign up for a race and ask for pledges. But just one race didn't seem to be enough. It didn't feel as big and impressive as I wanted it to feel (that's what she said). So I decided to sign up for one race each month for the next year and ask for pledges. And I was going to have shirts printed that supported my cause. My slogan was going to be "Could you do this covered in oil?" And I was going to workout in those shirts and compete in those shirts to raise awareness. And, and...

Now that's a big idea.

I looked for races and scheduled them according to my plan, 1 per month. I even went as far as to sign up for two half marathons, which is when the giant, ugly dollar sign attached to my big idea tapped me on the shoulder and shook it's finger at me. My plan was expensive, and even though most races support causes monetarily, they were not the cause that inspired me to act. I would be throwing my own money at other issues while asking my friends and family to donate to the issue that inspired me.

So my plan, as of now, is to create my own athletic goals to accomplish, 1 per month, instead of competing in the organized events. I'm going to donate the money that I would have spent on registration fees to a.) The National Wildlife Federation or b.) the local animal shelter(an option that Preston suggested after our logical conversation). I've already signed up and paid for the two half marathons, and that's okay. I will indulge in those. I haven't decided if I'm going to asked for pledges yet, or make shirts. But I think this is still a pretty big idea. A doable idea with a prettier dollar sign.

We need 38,000 more miles.

After a very small amount of planning last night, Pres and I were sure that next week, we would be lounging on our favorite beach at Hanalei Bay and spending the 4th of July in Oahu with our friend Matt. We had our flight planned and emails sent to studio apartments and hotels on the beach. I had visions of diving and sea turtles; Preston had tee times scheduled out in his mind. However, this morning I realized that week is probably the one week I can't go on vacation this summer because of work.

This afternoon, I was sure I had convinced Preston to go to Spain in five days. We would have a free hotel from Preston's parents' time share deal, and hey, it's Spain. Ironic that my friend Courtney just moved back to Texas from the very place we would go, Malaga. BUT we don't have enough air miles for an international flight. You would think with all the stuff I buy with that Continental Airlines credit card, we could go anywhere. $3,400 for plane tickets... so that's not happening.

We have free hotel options through Preston's parents' Marriott time share, but the flights to get to those hotels are way to expensive. We have air miles, but we can't use them during the weeks we want to travel, or we don't have enough to go to the good places with the free hotel options. It's just not working out!! So frustrating because I would really appreciate a nice beach right now, but we need 38,000 more miles to go to Hawaii any other time than next week. Thank you for dangling Dream Vacation in our faces for just those nice few minutes, Life. That was awesome of you.

Hey Starbucks Lady:

Dear Starbucks Lady that I have spent alot of time liking over the past three years,

When I ask you if you actually made my soy latte with soy milk instead of regular milk, it's because it is more important to me to check on that than to not hurt your feelings. When your response is playful, I don't mind. When your response is sarcastic, it kind of hurts my feelings. When you turn to your coworker and ask if she sees stupid written across your face, it pisses me off. If you accidentally made my drink with real milk, you would see HIVES all over my face. And I don't really believe you anyway because I didn't see a soymilk container on the counter, but I did see a regular milk container.

But you won't really have to worry about it anymore because I won't be getting my coffee from you. And I definitely won't waste anymore time liking you. I resend my fondness.

Thanks so much,

Katie
